Muscle Name: gastrocnemius - lateral head

    S1
    S2
Plexus:
    lumbosacral plexus

Named Nerves:
    tibial nerve

    sciatic nerve

Proximal Attachment:  Lateral condyle of the femur

Distal Attachment:  Calcaneus

Action: Plantar flexes the foot and flexes the knee.

Needle Insertion: In the posterior-lateral aspect of the calf muscle. Approximately 8 centimeters distal to the fibular head.

Activation for EMG:  Have the patient plantar flex the foot. Sometimes the muscle may be activated more easily by having the patient bend their knee first.
