Muscle Name: biceps femoris - long head

AKA:  musculus biceps femoris longus

Abbreviation: BF-LH

Spinal Nerve Roots:
    L5
    S1
Plexus:
    lumbosacral plexus

Named Nerves:
    sciatic nerve (tibial division)

Proximal Attachment:  ischial tuberosity and lenea aspera of the femur

Distal Attachment:  the head of the fibula

Action: Flexion of the knee joint, extension of the hip joint. It also externally rotates the leg when the knee is bent.

Needle Insertion: In the distal third of a line between the ischial tuberosity and the head of the fibular bone.

Activation for EMG:  The patient flexes their knee.
