Muscle Name: gluteus medius

AKA: musculus gluteus medius

Spinal Nerve Roots:
    L4
    L5
    S1
Plexus:
    lumbosacral plexus

Named Nerves:
    superior gluteal nerve

Proximal Attachment:  The gluteal surface of the ilium, deep to the gluteus maximus.

Distal Attachment:  The greater trochanter of the femur.

Action: Abducts the hip, possibly some external rotation of the thigh.

Needle Insertion: Approximately 3 centimeters distal to the midpoint of the crest of the ilium.

Activation for EMG:  Have the patient abduct their thigh.
