Central Pontine Myelinolysis, transverse section

Although clearly pontine and central, more than the myelin undergoes lysis secondary to osmotic stress upon over rapid correction of hyponatremia. The presence of even grossly visible cavitation explains the poor prognosis of symptomatic patients with this disorder.
