Tumefactive demyelination, H&E x 400

The enlarged cell with the bizarre fragment appearing nucleus was first described by Creutzfeldt and Peters in the early part of the twentieth century. Though not pathognomonic of tumefactive demyelination, the cells are characteristically seen within tumefactive demyelinating lesions

The unnecessarily large green arrow points to a Creutzfeldt cell. Creutzfeldt cells are a form of reactive astrocytes that are seen in active inflammatory diseases, such as demyelinating diseases. They have plentiful cytoplasm, and granular mitoses.
