Porencephaly refers to cavitary infarction involving both gray and white matter, often resulting in pial-ependymal fusion similar to that seen in schizencephaly. Porencephaly tends to be either unilateral or asymmetric, distinguishing this acquired lesion from the malformative schizencephaly.
