This image, from the National Institute of Aging, shows a senile plaque (dark blob in the center). The stain is a silver stain. During the 20th century, a variety of silver based histochemical techniques were developed to elucidate pathologic features not appreciable on routine H&E staining. Due to the cost of reagents, as well as technical expertise required to perform these stains, they have largely been replaced by panels of immunohistochemical stains.
