Subependymal Giant Cell Astrocytoma, intraoperative smear preparation x 200
Subependymal giant cell astrocytomas demonstrate a characteristic morphology on intraoperative cytologic preparations consisting of relatively monomorphic cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and neuronal nuclear morphology. Monomorphism and absence of mitotic activity and necrosis distinguishes these cells from those seen in other epithelioid type of tumor cells, such as rhabdoid cells, germinoma cells, and gemistocytic astrocytes.
