Structure of Skeletal Muscle - Schematic
This image illustrates the structural elements of skeletal muscles at different levels. Muscles are made up of millions of muscle fibers. Each fiber is a multinucleated cell (syncytium) containing a large number of myofibrils. Each myofibril is a series of sarcomeres, consisting of a lattice of proteins, including actin and myosin, which together act as the contractile engine of the muscle.
