Muscle Name: flexor carpi ulnaris

AKA:  musculus flexor carpi ulnaris

Abbreviation:  FCR

Spinal Nerve Roots:
    C7
    C8
    T1

Brachial Plexus Trunks:
    lower trunk

Brachial Plexus Cords:
    medial cord

Named Nerves:
    ulnar nerve

Proximal Attachment:  medial epicondyle (common flexor tendon)

Distal Attachment:  pisiform

Action:  flexion of wrist

Needle Insertion:  In the supinated forearm, midway between the medial epicondyle and the medial aspect of the wrist.

Activation for EMG:  

Two methods of activation:

  • Flex the wrist with an ulnar deviation.
  • Abduct the fifth finger. (Have the patient spread their fingers apart)


Pitfalls:  If the needle is inserted too deeply the flexor digitorum profundus will be sampled.
