Target fibers, NADH-TR histochemical stain
Target fibers may appear almost identical to central cores. Although target fibers are classically defined by a rim of increased oxidative activity surrounding the central region of decreased oxidative activity, this is not always apparent. In such cases, the structures are best distinguished based on the company they keep (small group atrophy with target fibers and selective type I atrophy with cores).
