Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, infected astrocyte, H&E stain X 600
Infection of astrocytes by the JC virus often results in bizarre nuclear morphology, which may be mistaken for neoplastic transformation. Note that most of the cells surrounding the bizarre astrocytes are macrophages, which are strongly indicative of a non-neoplastic process.
