Desmoplastic medulloblastoma, H&E stain x100
Desmoplastic medulloblastomas are characterized by reticulin-free islands ofbetter differentiated tumor separated by primitive neuroectodermal tumor cells within a dense reticulin network. This subtype of medulloblastoma typically presents in older children and young adults, except when it as part of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (Gorlin syndrome), when they typically present within the first 5 years of life, and is associated with abnormalities involving the PTCH gene on chromosome 9.
