ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

A) oligoastrocytoma

This answer is incorrect.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm. Oligoastrocytoma is the most common brain mixed glioma composed of mixed cells of oligodendroglial and astrocytic phenotypes. (1, 146)  (See References)

C) retinoblastoma

This answer is incorrect.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm. Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy of infants and children, occurring in 1 of 15,000 to 18,000 live births. There are 3-7 cases per million people per year worldwide. Age of onset is typically before five years. It arises from cells that are defective in both copies of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene (rb1) on chromosome 13, and has served as a model for the understanding or tumorigenesis. It is characterized by direct spread to the optic nerve and orbit as well as hematogeneous and lymphatic spread. It is radiosensitive and highly curable, but untreated may cause blindness or death. It is responsible for approximately 1% of all deaths caused by childhood cancer. (1, 148-189)  (See References)

D) ependymoma

This answer is incorrect.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm. Ependymoma is the most common intraspinal tumor associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage. (1,2)  (See References)

E) neuroblastoma

This answer is incorrect.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm. Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial malignant solid tumor in children, particularly under 5 years. It has an incidence of about 1:10,000 births. It is the most common tumor occuring in infancy, comprising up to 50% of malignancies among infants, and 20%-50% of all malignancies encountered during the neonatal period. It is the most common fetal malignancy. It is the most common malignant cause of spinal compression in the pediatric population. It is the most frequent neural crest tumor. It is the most common tumor of the abdomen in children. Clinical presentation and prognosis are widely heterogenous. In about 70% of cases, it arises in the adrenal gland. It is highly malignant. It accounts for approximately 15% of cancer-related pediatric deaths. The majority of patients die from the metastatic disease. It carries a poor prognosis especially in advanced stages.
