Muscle Name: gluteus maximus

AKA:  musculus gluteus maximus

Abbreviation: GMAX

Spinal Nerve Roots:
    L5
    S1
    S2
Plexus:
    lumbosacral plexus

Named Nerves:
    inferior gluteal nerve

Proximal Attachment:      Gluteal surface of ilium, lumbar fascia, sacrum, sacrotuberous ligament

Distal Attachment:  Gluteal tuberosity of the femur, iliotibial tract

Action: External rotation of the hip as well as extension of the hip.

Needle Insertion: With the patient lying on their side the needle is inserted in the upper outer quadrant of the buttock.

Activation for EMG:  Have the patient extend their leg or "squeeze their cheeks".

Pitfalls: Too deep of insertion in a more medial section may lead to penetrating the sciatic nerve.
