Circle of Willis, gross photographs of dissected arteries

The circle of Willis provides conduits for collateral circulation in the case of slowly developing arterial stenoses. The transected vessels in the upper center portion of the photographs are the distal internal carotid arteries as they bifurcate into the middle cerebral and anterior cerebral arteries. Entering below are the posterior communicating arteries branching from the posterior cerebral artery. The top of the basilar and superficial cerebellar arteries are barely visible at the bottom edge of the photograph.
