Frontotemporal lobar degeneration, ubiquitin immunoreactivity within dentate gyrus of hippocampus.
The frontotemporal lobar dementias lacking tau pathology are composed of several disease categories. The largest comprises frontotemporal lobar degenerations demonstrating ubiquitinated cytoplasmic inclusions (FTLD-U). Most, but not all, FTLD-U have been shown to demonstrate specific immunoreactivity with antibodies to transactive response DNA binding protein with a molecular weight of 43 kDa (TDP-43). This large subset of patients comprised the clinical category of frontotemporal lobar dementia with motor neuron disease (also sometimes referred to as the ALS/dementia complex).
