Muscle Name: flexor digitorum profundus to digit 5

AKA:  musculus flexor digitorum profundus

Abbreviation:  FDP5


Spinal Nerve Roots:
    C7
    C8
    T1

Brachial Plexus Trunks:
    lower trunk

Brachial Plexus Cords:
    medial cord

Named Nerves:
    ulnar nerve

Proximal Attachment:  ulna

Distal Attachment:  distal phalanges

Action:  flex hand, interphalangeal joints

Needle Insertion:  Approximately four centimeters distal to the medial aspect of the olecranon

Activation for EMG:  Flex the distal interphalngeal (DIP) joints.

Pitfalls:  If the needle is too deep the flexor digitorum to the second and third digits will be sampled.

Notes:  Often involved in an ulnar mononeuropathy across the elbow.
