Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis, extending into caudal brainstem, mid sagittal section of brain with arrows

This is spinal cord from a patient with transverse myelitis. Transverse myelitis often extends rostrally and caudally across several spinal segments, as in this case. The unnecessarily large green arrow points to a very small patch of tissue at the bottom right of the image which has been relatively spared from demyelination. Most of the cord visible in this image, such as the pale area indicated by the unnecessarily large red arrow, is involved in the demyelinating process.
