Pelizaeus Merzbacher disease, Coronal section, Close Up, labeled

This image shows a coronal section through a gross brain specimen from someone who had Pelizaeus Merzbacher disease. There is demyelination of the white matter (blue), with sparing of the subcortical U-fibers (green). The demyelinated area (labeled in blue) has a striped appearance, because of perivascular preservation of myelin. This appearance is refered to as tigroid, because of the supposed resemblance to tiger stripes.
