This answer is incorrect.


The cortex sends inputs to the basal ganglia primarily through the caudate and putamen.  Neurons in these nuclei synapse with neurons in the internal and external segments of the globus pallidus.  The external segment of the globus pallidus sends outputs to the internal segment of the globus pallidus and to the subthalamic nucleus, which feeds back to the internal segment of the globus pallidus.  The internal segment of the globus pallidus provides output to the thalamus.  Onuf's nucleus is in the spinal cord and is not a part of the basal ganglia.  (See References)
