ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

A) Alzheimer type II cell proliferation

This answer is incorrect.

Proliferation of Alzheimer type II cells occurs in response to states of elevated blood ammonia.  (See References)

B) Creutzfeldt cell proliferation

This answer is incorrect.

Creutzfeldt cells are a form of reactive astrocytes that are typically seen in response to active inflammation, such as demyelinating disease.  They are not typically associated with damage to Purkinje cells following an infarct.  (See References)

C) Bergmann gliosis

This answer is correct.

This image shows an H&E stain of neonate cerebellum. The unnecessarily large red arrow is pointing to a Purkinje cell.

Bergmann gliosis is a proliferation of astrocytes in the Purkinje cell layer of the cerebellum. It is a form of reactive gliosis which occurs in response to cerebellar damage, particularly in response to damage to Purkinje cells.

D) Mast cell proliferation

This answer is incorrect.

Mast cell proliferation does not occur in response to infarction.  (See References)

E) Focal inflammation

This answer is incorrect.

Infarction of cerebellar tissue would more likely result in a form of reactive gliosis than in focal inflammation.  (See References)
